Winterizing Lead-Acid Boat Batteries

The first cold snap of the season kills more boat batteries than any storm. Not the freeze itself, but neglect: a bank left half-charged in an unheated cabin, terminals crusted white, no charger and no plan. Come April, the owner turns the key and gets a click. That click is the sound of a $180 Group 27 battery that died because nobody spent twenty minutes in October.

Winterizing lead-acid batteries is not complicated, and it is not expensive. It is a short list of tasks done in the right order, before the temperature drops below freezing and stays there. Follow the checklist below and your bank will start next spring like nothing happened.

Why a Charged Battery Survives and a Dead One Doesn’t

A lead-acid battery is a box of lead plates sitting in electrolyte, a mix of sulfuric acid and water. When the battery is fully charged, that electrolyte is dense with acid and resists freezing down to about minus 75 F. That is colder than almost anywhere you’ll store a boat.

Discharge it, and the chemistry changes. The acid moves into the plates and leaves mostly water behind, and water freezes at 32 F. A battery sitting at 50 percent charge can freeze solid around 15 to 20 F, and when water turns to ice it expands. That expansion warps the plates or splits the case, and a split case is scrap.

So the single most important winter task is simple: store the battery fully charged. Everything else on this list supports that one idea.

The Pre-Storage Checklist

Do these steps in order, ideally on a dry day in the fall before your region sees hard frost. Budget about 30 minutes of hands-on time plus charging time.

  1. Charge to 100 percent first. Put the bank on a proper charger and bring it to full. A flooded battery reads about 12.7 volts at rest; an AGM reads closer to 12.8 to 12.9. Measure with the battery disconnected and settled for an hour, not right off the charger.
  2. Check and top off electrolyte (flooded only). If you have flooded batteries with removable caps, look at the fluid level. It should cover the plates by about a quarter inch. Add distilled water only, never tap water, and never add acid.
  3. Clean the terminals. Corrosion is a resistance point that wastes charge and heat. A paste of baking soda and water on a stiff brush cuts the white crust. Rinse, dry, and coat the posts with dielectric grease or a dedicated terminal spray.
  4. Disconnect parasitic loads. Bilge pumps, stereos, chartplotters, and propane sniffers all draw small currents around the clock. Pull the negative cable or throw the battery switch to off so nothing drains the bank while you’re away.
  5. Label and record. Write down the resting voltage and the date on a piece of tape. Next time you check it, you’ll know instantly whether it’s holding.

A boat I rewired last spring came in because “the batteries won’t hold a charge.” Both Group 31s were fine. The owner had left a cheap LED courtesy light wired straight to the bank, bypassing the switch, and it had bled them flat over four months. Ten minutes with a multimeter found it. That is the mistake I see most weekends: something small, always on, that nobody remembers wiring.

Keeping It Charged Through the Winter

Lead-acid batteries self-discharge even when nothing is connected. A healthy flooded battery loses roughly 4 to 6 percent of its charge per month at room temperature; cold slows that down, but heat in a warm garage speeds it up. AGM batteries hold better, around 1 to 3 percent monthly.

You have two honest options. Leave it on a smart maintenance charger, or pull it and top it off by hand on a schedule.

Option 1: A Maintenance Charger

A maintenance charger, sometimes called a battery tender or a float charger, is a small device that holds the battery at full charge without cooking it. Modern ones are microprocessor controlled and switch to a float voltage around 13.2 to 13.6 volts once the battery is full. Good units run $30 to $70 and draw almost nothing.

This is the set-and-forget answer, but it needs shore power. If your boat lives on a mooring or a lift with no outlet, this option is off the table unless you bring the batteries home. Option 2: Manual Top-Offs

No shore power, no problem, as long as you’re disciplined. Fully charge the bank, disconnect it, and store it. Then plan to recharge every 4 to 6 weeks before it drops below about 12.4 volts (roughly 75 percent).

The number I tell people: never let a stored battery sit below 12.4 volts. Below that, sulfation starts, where lead sulfate crystals harden on the plates and permanently steal capacity. A little is reversible; a lot is not.

Where and How to Store the Bank

Cold alone doesn’t hurt a charged battery, but a few storage habits stretch its life.

The old advice about not setting a battery on a concrete floor dates back to rubber and wood cases from decades ago. Modern polypropylene cases don’t self-discharge through concrete. That said, a cold slab pulls heat out of the bottom cells, so a scrap of plywood underneath does no harm and keeps the case off any standing damp.

Don’t Just Winterize, Right-Size for Next Season

Winter layup is the best time to fix a bank that never quite kept up last summer. The boat is empty, the cables are accessible, and you have months to order parts.

A Few Safety Notes Worth Repeating

When the weather turns, don’t just reconnect and go. Check the resting voltage against the number you wrote down in the fall. If a flooded battery reads 12.7 and held it all winter, you did this right.
